YOU CAN FLY

Key Passage: Colossians 3: 1-4

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

The story was told of Kofi who was on a hunting expedition in the mountains of Koforidua, Ghana. There he saw a little eaglet left alone in its mothers nest. He took it home and kept it in his poultry. The eaglet grew among the chicks, drank from the same bowl and ate from the same basin, and also from the dustbin. Though it developed a big body frame and big strong wings, it never tried to fly.

One day, Mensah, Kofi’s childhood friend visited from Accra. He looked at the birds in the poultry and wondered what an eagle was doing among the chicken. He asked, “Can’t this eagle fly away?” “No!” replied Kofi, “This one can’t fly.” Mensah was not convinced. He brought it out to the open, placed it on his palm and shouted, “Eagle, fly!” And the eagle jumped down to the ground and ran to the dustbin to pick some food. He picked it up again and threw it up. The eagle opened its wing a little and fell to the ground. Kofi turned to his friend and said, “I told you that this one cannot fly.” But Mensah had an idea. He took the eagle to the top of the mountain. There, the eagle was able to look up to the sky and saw other birds flying. Then, Mensah said, “Eagle, fly!” and threw it up. As the eagle was falling from the top of the mountain, it spread its wings and the wind carried it. It flew away and never returned to Kofi’s house.

The Scripture reveals that as a Christian you have been raised with Christ. You are meant to live victoriously and display the majesty and glory of God through your life. You are born to live as an eagle and you should fly. You should quit living as an unbeliever – struggling with sin, compromising your faith and living in fear, failure and defeat. You should get out from the dustbin, look up like the eagle and fly. “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col 3:2). “Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph 4:22-24 RSV). “Be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love” (Eph 5:1-2). Be a worthy vessel for God and focus on your heavenly goal. You will surely live your whole life in victory.

Pray, Lord, help me to discover Your hidden treasures within me; grant me the grace to exploit them to the glory of Your name. By Your grace I will fly.
