Breath of Power

A Weekly Devotional of Jesus Power Outreach Ministries

Week 16: April 12 - 18, 2004

A STORY WELL TOLD

Key Passage: Luke 24: 36 - 40

And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. He said, "Peace be with you." But the whole group was terribly frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost! "Why are you frightened?" he asked. "Why do you doubt who I am? Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do!" As he spoke, he held out his hands for them to see, and he showed them his feet (NLT).

The story of the arrest, trial, death and resurrection of Jesus is very dramatic as evidenced in the Gospels. His crucifixion was in the public view on the hill of Calvary. When he died, he was lowered from the cross and buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathaea. He was left wrapped in linen strips, with a grave cloth around his head. The tomb was closed with a great stone rolled over it. And the Jewish authority got the permission of Pontius Pilate to seal the tomb and post soldiers to guard it. They were confident that the fate of the Son of God was sealed.

However, that was not the end of the story, as the event of the third day was to reverse the verdict of hell. An earthquake shook the earth; the stone was rolled away and Jesus Christ walked out of the grave alive. The evidence of his resurrection was infallible (Acts 1:3). The soldiers on guard rose up from a sudden deep stupor to see an empty tomb (Matt 28:4,11). The faithful women who came to attend to his body saw the stone rolled away, and an angel who told them, "He is not here; for He is risen" (Matt 28:6). Peter and John who entered the grave saw the linen strips and the grave cloth well kept apart (Jn 20: 6-7).

He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene who stayed back by the graveside (Jn 20:16); and by the faithful women, who, when they saw him, held his feet and worshipped him (Matt 28:9). When he appeared to the confused and frightened disciples, all doors were shut, but he stood in their midst and proclaimed peace to them. He said, "See me! Touch me! See my wound marks! Touch my side where I was pierced! Stop doubting! You are not seeing a ghost, for a ghost does not have flesh and body as I do! It is I, Jesus Christ! I have risen!" (Luk 24:39). They did, and he ate broiled fish with them (Luk 24:42-43).

The story was well told; the evidence was convincing; there was nothing wanting in the proof. Jesus Christ is alive.

Pray: Lord, I receive your peace in the face of the doubts, fears and confusion. I receive the faith and grace to walk in the experience of the resurrection of Christ all the days of my life. Amen.
