Our Opulent Heritage

Key Passage: Psalm 16: 5-6

O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance. I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.

I was in a Bible Study session in Temecula, California when an elderly lady told the story of how her mother-in-law was always sending “care packages” containing steaks, peanut butter, detergents and some other household items to her and her husband after their wedding. They were greatly delighted and asked why she was doing that. Her reply was, “I enjoy doing this, because, it gives me the pleasure of seeing joy in your faces.”

God feels the same when we are joyful and thankful to Him for His goodness in our lives. He is our heritage, our portion and our cup. He is everything to us and is the only one that can quench the deep thirst of our souls. He wants us to enjoy His goodness, not just in heaven when we die, but here on earth – now – when we are alive. He delights in blessing us: filling our lives with goodness and preserving us from all evil.

There are times when we are weighed down by the pressures of life and we worry and complain, and times when we consider what we have and what we have not. At such times, we should reassure ourselves that since the Lord, the Omnipotent, is our heritage and our portion, we have sufficiency in all things. All things that are His are freely and fully ours in Christ Jesus, and what we have as His children is more than all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; for Christ has given us more than what the devil could offer (Matt 4: 8-9; Eph 1: 3-4; 1 Cor 3: 21).

Prayer: Thank God for the great heritage we have in Christ Jesus; pray that God will enable you to draw from it daily.
