Learning to Receive From God

Key Passage: John 16: 23-27

"And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God”

God loves every believer and wants him to receive His manifold blessings. But there are many people who do not know how to receive from God. Their stories are full of disappointments and woes, and they are perplexed that the promises of God do not come true in their lives.

Jesus addressed this issue as he was talking to his disciples. He explained to them that receiving from God is an experience they would receive when they develop an intimate personal relationship with God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. He encouraged them not to be weary of asking, as that is the channel of their receiving fulfillment for their dreams. He told them to ask in his name, which means, “in his authority”, “in his place” and “through him” as that will have the same effect as if Jesus prayed directly to the Father. That is because, the Father loves all that believe in His son Jesus, just as He loves Jesus Himself. He said, “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (v 24).

Receiving from God is easy because God is a great giver (Jam 1: 5). He cares for all His children and wants them to ask in order to receive. There are simple truths we need to learn and imbibe in our lives in order to open the door of great receiving in our Christian experience. They are as follows: {1}. Maintain a good personal relation with God through Jesus. If you have not accepted Jesus in your heart as you personal Lord and Savior, you need to do so; and if you have, you still need to separate yourself from sin and live a holy life (Joh 9: 31). {2}. Study and meditate on God’s word, as that will help you to know His will and be able to pray accordingly (Josh 1: 8). {3}. Make your requests to Him in prayers, for that is the way to draw His attention to your needs (Matt 7: 7). {4}. Pray with a right motive for God will not grant you a request that will not glorify Him (Jas 4: 3). {5}. Come with a right attitude for God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (Jas 4: 6). {6}. Be a giver - give towards God’s service and to the needy - for those are the ways to sow the seeds you will reap at harvest (Prov 11: 24). {7}. Believe God, for He hears the voice of those who call him with a true heart (Mk 11: 24). {8} Begin to thank and praise Him, because the one who has promised you is faithful (Php 4: 6).
