Key Passage: Malachi 4: 5-6

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse."

Our world is so full of evil, violence, terror, immorality, corruption and such like. Those are manifestations of lawlessness, which is a sign that there is no order and no respect of authority in our societies. The situation we find in our societies is a reflection of the condition of our families, because the family is the nucleus of the society. A lot of our families are dysfunctional. There is little or no love and mutual respect among the parents. The children are rebellious and would not submit to their parents. Many young people run away from home and get involved in crime, drugs, gangs and cults.

God has set the father as the figure of His authority in the home. The father is the head, the leader and the priest of the family. A true father should stand between God and his family and draw God’s blessings to his family. He should protect his family members and provide for their needs. He should effect discipline and bring correction to the children in the home. This will ensure order and sanity in the home, which will in turn bring order and sanity in the community and the larger society.

The devil knows the important role of the father and has continued to attack him from every side. His main strategy is to attack his heart. He puts a lot of pressure on many fathers and draws their hearts away from God and from his family. Many fathers are under financial pressures and are incapable of meeting their family obligations. Some others work long hours and have no time for God or for their families. Some also are held captive by drugs, alcohol and infidelity. All these have gone a long way in undermining the moral authority of many fathers to lead their families. This has affected the family, the community and the society.

However, all hope is not lost. God is restoring the value and the authority of the father as part of His end-time revival. His main strategy is by drawing the heart of the fathers to Him and to their families. Many fathers are coming into intimate relationship with God and thereby returning in love and care to their wives and children. This is restoring integrity in the father and bringing healing to many homes. This is a great step in the restoration of our societies. Pray for the healing of strained relationships in homes and the restoration of the father’s authority; pray that this will in turn bring order and sanity in our societies.
