IMMANUEL

Key Passage: Matthew 1: 21-23

"And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

The presence and approval of God is the greatest treasure man could have on the earth. It signifies light in the midst of darkness, peace at the rising of every storm, victory over all foes, and confidence in the face of every challenge. Those and much more are what Jesus represents for all who believe in Him. He is the revelation of God’s love to mankind and the fulfillment of man’s dream for salvation, deliverance and restoration.

“Immanuel” is a Greek name that signifies, “The Mighty God with us.” The name first came as a sign from God to King Ahaz of Judah. He was overwhelmed when his enemies united to fight against his kingdom. He thought that his help could only be from the gentile King of Assyria. But God assured him that He will deliver his kingdom and told him to ask Him for a miraculous signs. Ahaz could not, out of unbelief. However, God gave him a sign that had a double fulfillment. The first being the presence of God to care for, protect and deliver Judah from the aggressors; and the second being the incarnation of the Son of God to bring salvation, deliverance and restoration to all mankind.

Jesus is the full _expression of God in human flesh. In him, the desires of God and the hunger of men meet. He reconciled men to God and paved the way for men to have intimate fellowship with their Maker. Through him, mortal men could become partakers of the divine nature and partners with God in the building of His Kingdom.

Nature reveals God as being “above us,” the law reveals Him as being “against us,” but the Gospel reveals Him as being “with us and for us.” What a privilege to have the King of kings and the Lord of lords with us as we walk the path of life and wade through life storms. We have the assurance that all shall be well because God is with us and for us.

Pray: Lord, help me to always recognize that you are with me and for me; deliver me from all troubles and establish me in Your will.
