Week 45: November 7 -13, 2005

RESPECTING GOD'S ORDER

Key Passage: Numbers 12: 1-2, 9-10

Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. So they said, "Has the LORD indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?" And the LORD heard it. So the anger of the LORD was aroused against them, and He departed. And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper.

Order is the sequential or harmonious arrangement of things. It is the condition in which every part or piece is in the right place and is working properly. Order brings about proper functioning, harmony, rightness, decency and peace. It ensures there is no disorder, disorganization, clutter, confusion, chaos or anarchy. Order ensures progress and guarantees success, while disorder brings trouble and failure.

God recognizes and establishes order. He does things in order. He sets order in His Kingdom and expects all to recognize and respect it. His government is operated by order, His authority is unexercised by order and His blessings flow through established order. He jealously protects the order He has set and considers disrespect to it as rebellion against His sovereign authority.

Aaron and Miriam challenged the authority of Moses, the man who God had set as leader over the people of Israel. They thought that they had genuine reasons to do so, and that since they and Moses were equally God’s people, they were right in challenging his decision and his authority. But God viewed that as contempt against His sovereign authority, and the punishment was quick and grave.

Have you ever wondered that though Moses disobeyed God by striking the rock when told to speak to it; yet, water gushed out for the people to drink (Num 20:8-11)? Are you surprised that God honored the words of Eli and gave Hannah a miracle baby; yet, Eli and his sons were rebellious to God (1 Sam 1:17-19)? God allowed these events to happen the way they did because He had to honor the order He had set.

People have been specially blessed and favored because they recognized and followed God’s established order in their lives. David did not kill Saul when he had the opportunity to because he recognized and respected God’s order (1 Sam 26:7-9). God protected David and made him king of all Israel. Joshua received the Spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands upon him. Elisha followed Elijah until he received a double portion of his anointing.

Pray: Lord, help me to always recognize and respect your established order in my life; grant me the blessings and favor that flow through it.
