THE ROAR OF THE LION FROM ZION Part 3

Key Passage: Amos 2: 4 - 7

Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, lies which their fathers followed. But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.” Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals. They pant after the dust of the earth which is on the head of the poor, And pervert the way of the humble. A man and his father go in to the same girl, to defile My holy name.”

God is holy in all His ways and righteous in His judgments. He detests sin in all His creation, and He punishes for it both among believers and unbelievers alike. Where the righteous turns away from his righteous ways and sins against God, and would not repent, God punishes him like the wicked (Ezek 33:18).

The people of Judah and Israel are God’s people. God removed the heathen nations that occupied the land of Canaan because of their abominable deeds and established the people of Israel according to His covenant with Abraham. But when they settled and prospered in the land, they turned away from God and despised his laws. They oppressed the poor and wallowed in immoral and abominable practices just like the other heathen nations around them. They therefore incurred the wrathful judgment of the Lion from Zion.

God’s standard of righteous is firm and certain: “‘The Lord knows those who are His,’ and, ‘Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity’” (2 Tim 2:9). Anyone who calls himself, “Christian” or “Born-again”, and still lives in sin is playing with fire, and is in the danger of God’s wrathful punishment. The Scripture says, “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” 1 Cor 6:9,10 (NIV).

God’s instructions for His children are clear: “Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them” Eph 5:11. “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming” 1 Jn 3:5-6 (NIV). To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to fear You and help me to depart from evil
