SEEK
GOOD AND NOT EVIL
Key Passage: Amos
5: 12 - 15
For I know your manifold transgressions
and your mighty sins: afflicting the just and taking bribes;
diverting the poor from justice at the gate. Therefore the
prudent keep silent at that time, for it is an evil time.
Seek good and not evil, that you may live; so the LORD God
of hosts will be with you, as you have spoken. Hate evil,
love good; establish justice in the gate. It may be that
the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of
Joseph.”
The pursuit of God’s righteousness should
accompany our devotion as God’s people or else our devotion
would be in vain (Js 1:27). Walking with God involves knowing Him,
listening to His voice and doing the things that are right in His
sight. We cannot say that we belong to a righteous God and yet
do evil and wickedness (1 Jn 3:7-9).
There are many who claim to know God but who do wicked and immoral things.
They hate and segregate against others and oppress people who are under
them. Some who find themselves in positions of influence abuse their offices
and use them as opportunities for corrupt enrichment. These are displeasing
to God and incur His wrathful judgment. The Scripture says, “If we
say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and
do not practice the truth” 1 Jn 1:6. “And have no fellowship
with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them” Eph
5:11. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness” Rom
1:18.
Those who receive the best from God are those who love Him and do the things
that are pleasing to Him. “For he who would love life and see good
days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking
deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and
pursue it. For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears
are open to their prayers; but the face of the LORD is against those who
do evil” 1 Pet 3:10-12.
Prayer: Lord,
forgive me for every unrighteous deed in my life; teach me
to love righteousness and hate evil and be an example of a
true child of God.
