Week 6: February 3 - 9, 2003

TAKE THE MASTER AT HIS WORD

Key Passage: Luke 6:7-11a

So the Scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him. But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy?” And when He looked around at them all, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. But they were filled with rage.

Jesus is the word of life (John 1:1,4). His word is spirit and life (John 6:63). It is full of power (Luke 4:32). No one ever came to him in faith and went home disappointed. He knows your needs and wants to help you. Receive his word today. Believe him and act in faith, and you will experience his mighty power.

The Scribes and the Pharisees were of the elite class of the religious community. However, they lacked the spirit of compassion to understand the needs of the man with shrieveled hand. Their judgments were impaired by tradition and legalism. They were offended by the desire of the man to be healed on a ‘wrong day’, and the readiness of Jesus to do it. Jesus would not be moved by their insensitivity and religious bigotry. He spoke to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand was completely restored.

The man with crippled hand was wise to have shut his mind off the suggestions of the religious theorists and to listen to the word of the compassionate Miracle Worker. He got his miracle, while the bigots were filled with rage. O what great miracles we would receive if we would close our ears to the words of tradition, fear, unbelief and legalism and open them to believe, receive and act on the words of the Master!

The Lord said, “I am the LORD who heals you” (Ex 15:26). He also said, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify Me” (Ps 50:15). In Matthew 11 verse 28, he said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Go to Jesus in prayer, call upon him in faith, believe him at his word and you will see the wonders of his power. He is more than enough for you.
