BOW OR BURN

Key Passage: Daniel 3: 16-18

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

"If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king.

"But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up."

There are times in our Christian race when we are drawn between taking a stand for God and yielding to the pressures of the kingdom of darkness. Sometimes, taking a stand for God could be at the peril of the loss of ones life or job, or any other thing that is precious to one. The question is, "What should our stand as true believers be?"

The three Hebrew youths were determined to live right for God in the corrupt and wicked kingdom of Babylon. Satan used people to set them up, inspiring King Nebuchadnezzar to make a golden statue and demand that everyone in his realm bowed and worshiped it. Most of the people must have bowed, because they feared the great power of the King. It would have been unpopular not to, and many would not have seen the wrong in so doing. But these youths would not compromise their faith in God. The consequences were grave. The penalty was harsh. The verdict was clear: "Bow or burn".

The King gave them a last chance to bow and save themselves from the pangs of the flame; but they stood their ground and boldly declared their resolve- "We will rather burn than bow". The King being infuriated by their adamant faith issue another command- "Increase the fire seven times over". They were tied and thrown into the burning flame. The fire was so hot that the flame killed those who threw them in. But for these faithful youths, the fire had no power on them. Indeed, God appeared in the fire to defend them from being consumed.

Likewise, God will defend you if you will take a stand of faith and refuse to compromise, even when under pressure. God has the power to override the devil’s verdict against you, and turn the situation to your own good. The faith of these youths made the King to bow and worship God.

Pray, Lord, give me the faith to stand no matter what the devil brings.
