AWAKE AND PRAY

Key Passage: Matt 26: 40-41

Then He came to the disciples and found them asleep, and said to Peter, "What? Could you not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

One of the greatest power on earth is the power of prayer. That is because prayer brings forth the power of the Omnipotent God on earth. When the people of God are active in prayer, power is released to them for exploits and victories. However, when their prayer fire dwindles, they become spiritually impotent and incapable of withstanding the onslaughts of Satan and his kingdom.

There is no better way believers could influence human activities than through prayers. Life battles are won and lost at the prayer closet. That is also the place where victors and victims are made. God wants us to always win. That is why He admonishes us to "watch and pray".

There are dark hours, when everything seems to fall apart and Heaven seems silent. At such times, it seems Satan’s power reigns supreme (Lk 22:53 LB). This occurs mostly when the prayer backbones of the believers are broken and they are relapsed into spiritual slumber.

The Ministry team of Jesus faced the dark hour at the Garden of Gethsemane. The disciples thought they were in the garden for picnic and relaxation. Little did they know that Satan had prepared for a strategic attack on them. They soon slumbered, as Satan swung into action. He so drugged them with sleep that none could respond to Jesus’ call to them to awake and pray, even for an hour. At the time Jesus awoke them the third time, it was already too late, the enemy had prevailed and their Master had been betrayed into the hands of sinners (Matt 26:45).

What a tragedy it is when we fail in our life battles because of spiritual slumber? The Lord is calling us to awake and pray. Our present world is so full of perils and dangers, and we do not know when the dark hour comes. We must therefore be in a constant state of watchfulness and prayer. The Lord will help us.
