Most people who commit sin figure that they will
never get caught. They see themselves as invincible, lucky, or smart.
But that is the same old game that always backfires. Just know that
no sinner can outsmart the devil. He sets the trap and he knows how
well it works. The world is full of broken people who thought their
sins wouldn’t catch up with them. But it did. It’s just
a matter of time. But be sure your sin will find you out.
The story was told of a boy called ‘Mr. Beans’.
He earned that name because he thought he was smart. His mother left
him in the garden to sow bean seedlings. He emptied all the seedlings
in one bed and covered it with earth. He thought he was smart until
the third day when the mother visited the garden.
Achan too thought he was smart. He was part of the
Joshua army that saw the wall of Jericho fall. He heard their commander,
Joshua, hand down the order, “Jericho and all in it are
cursed by God. Do not touch any of the things in it, or you will
be cursed and all Israel with you” (Josh 6: 18). He knew
the seriousness of the order. But there he was, under the ruins of
a wealthy man’s house. There was this gorgeous Babylonian coat
his eyes could not go past. By the side of it was this open safe
with a sizeable sum of money. Everyone in the house was dead. The
entire property was already charred by the inferno. His mind told
him that if he had the coat and the money that some of his problems
would be over. He looked around to be sure no one was watching, took
the coat and the money, put them under his overall, walked unassumingly
to his tent, dug the ground and hid them. He looked around again
and was sure no one took notice. He then chuckled and mumbled to
himself, “Wow! I’ve made it! That was smart!”
Few days later, things began to take a different
turn in the camp. Some soldiers were killed in a battle and Joshua
was lying on bare ground in rags, crying. He suddenly got up to say
that someone sinned. But what did that mean in a camp with hundred
of thousands of soldiers? “We must find the offender”,
said Joshua. Achan looked around and no one was looking at him. He
was sure no one knew what he did. But just like a dream, he was picked
as the offender and he found himself confessing, “I’m
sorry. It’s the work of the devil. I was tempted, and I…. ” But
that was late. His sin had found him out, and the end was gruesome.
Please, read what happened next in Joshua 7 verses 25-26.
Sin is evil, and is a deadly trap. You better don’t
fiddle with it however safe it may seem. But if you would not border
to heed to that warning, you should be certain of one thing, ‘Your
sin will find you out’.
