Key Passage: Numbers
12: 3
Now the man Moses was very humble, more than
all men who were on the face of the earth.
What a testimony for a human being who lived on the
surface of this earth. He was the most humble person in His generation.
This is a great lesson for us at a time like this when very many people,
including ministers of God, are proud and arrogant because of their
achievements and attainments. God wants all His servants to carry the
emblem of gentleness and humility wherever they are and in whatever
they do. He wants them to impact their generation with that life style
which reflects the life style of Christ.
Moses was privileged to be one of the greatest leaders in human history,
yet he was humble and gentle. Before his call, he was a notable prince
in Egypt. At the peak of his fame, he was betrayed, and he ran into
exile for safety. There, God encountered him and gave him the commission
to deliver Israel from a 400 years bondage in Egypt. When he confronted
Pharaoh, Pharaoh despised his God and asked, "Who is the LORD,
that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD,
nor will I let Israel go” (Ex 5:2). Moses went on to show
him the power of the Lord, with ten terrible plagues that humbled him
and devastated his nation, that he had to call Moses by night saying, “Rise,
go out from among my people…. Go serve the Lord …and bless
me also” (Ex 12:31-32). When Pharaoh changed his mind and
pursued Israel, desiring to overtake them and return them to Egypt,
Moses stretched his rod over the Red Sea, separated it and let Israel
pass on dry ground. When Pharaoh and his soldiers stepped into that
ground, Moses stretched the rod again, returned the water and drowned
them. What a man! However, when he was opposed on his personal marriage
decision and accused of monopoly of inspiration, he did not react angrily
and arrogantly, he took the matter to God humbly.
This should be to us a great challenge in humility. God expects us
to be clothed with meekness irrespective of our achievements or status
in life. That will bring us divine favor and exaltation. "God
resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (Jam 4:6;
1 Pet 5:5).
Jesus is our perfect example in humility. He came from the highest
and condescended to the lowest. He humbled himself and became obedient
to the point of death. As a result, God exalted him above all, and
gave him the name that is above every name (Phil 2:6-11).
Pray that God will grant you the spirit of meekness.
Determine to be an example in humility and gentleness. The grace of
God is sufficient for you.
