Key Passage: Romans
8:14-17
For as many as are led by the Spirit of
God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit
of
bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption
by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself
bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and
if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also
be glorified
together.
There are many Christians who lack the boldness
to step into their privileges as sons of God. Many do not understand
and enjoy the freedom in their new life in Christ, but are held bound
by fear and timidity. They are unable to walk confidently in the
power of God and receive the blessings of the Kingdom of God.
Fear is a great instrument of Satan’s bondage
against mankind (Heb 2:15). Fear makes our mountains too big and
obscures our vision. It paralyses our faith and shuts us off our
miracles (1 Jn 4:18). It hinders us from serving God with confidence
and from relating with fellow believers without suspicion.
The Holy Spirit who we received when we gave our
lives to Jesus liberates us from fear. He is the Spirit of adoption
through whom we have become sons of God. Satan does not have any
more controlling authority over us. Our sins have been atoned for
through the precious blood of Jesus and we now enjoy a covenant relationship
with God. We now have full access into the holiest place of God’s
presence and can now approach God as our Father.
God want us to live as true sons and not as slaves – held
bound by fear and timidity. 2 Timothy 1:7 reads, “For God
has not given us a spirit of fear [timidity NIV], but of power and
of love and of a sound mind.” The Holy Spirit who indwells
us is, first, the
Spirit of power. He gives us the miracle working
power of God, which enables us to be effective witnesses of Jesus
here on earth. He is, second, the
Spirit of love. He enables us to love God wholeheartedly
and love mankind who is created in His image. He takes away fear,
suspicion, hatred, jealous, strife and hypocrisy, and enables us
to care, tolerate and forgive. And He is, third, the
Spirit of sound mind. He enables us to “think
right” and make good judgment. It is when we think God’s
way that we can act God’s way, and it is only then that we
can enjoy the Kingdom life that God has promised (Lk 12:32).
Pray, Lord I reject the spirit
of fear and timidity; and I receive your free Spirit. I promise to
follow you truthfully and faithfully all my days in Jesus name.
