Key Passage: Galatians
6: 1
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass,
you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness,
considering yourself lest you also be tempted. Bear one another’s
burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
One of the accusations made against the present
day Church of Christ is that it is an army that slays its wounded.
Many a time, some valiant soldiers had fallen wounded in battle.
Some have fallen into sin or error, or have backslidden in their
faith. Rather than pray for them or seek to restore them, many
of their spiritual compatriots have helped to condemn and destroy
them utterly. This is not supposed to be. The race we are engaged
in is a tough race, and our enemy, the devil, is always on our
heels to make us trip. It is by the grace of God we are up and
on course. But if any of us fall, we should turn and with a heart
of compassion and a spirit of meekness seek to restore him. That
is the way to be our “brother’s keeper”.
Our “holier than thou” and judgmental
attitude has not helped us. Many times we have washed our dirty
linen before the world and exposed our flanks to the enemy, and
the name of our God has as a result been drawn to the mud. The
Scriptures tells us that the ministry of Jesus is to seek the lost
sheep (Matt 15:24). God has preserved hope for the fallen soldiers
(Pro 24:16). We should let ourselves be used as God’s instruments
to restore them to the faith and to their relationship with God.
The great King David fell to the culpable sins
of lust, covetousness, adultery, deception, conspiracy and murder
over the matter of Uriah the Hittite. But Prophet Nathan helped
him to return to God in brokenness and true repentance (2 Sam 12:7-14;
Ps 51:1-19). Jesus warned and prayed for Apostle Peter against
Satan’s plot to have and disgrace him. Yet, Peter fell, denying
the Master three whole times (Lk 22: 31-32, 55-62). However, Jesus,
after his resurrection returned to restore him (John 21:15-17).
Apostle James said, “Brethren, if anyone
among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,
let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his
way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”-Jam
5:19-20. Apostle Paul admonished, “We then who are
strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to
please ourselves” – Rom 15:1.
Pray, Lord, make me the instrument
of healing and restoration for every wounded and fallen soldier
in the body of Christ, in Jesus name.
