Passage: Hebrew
4: 10-11
For he who has entered His rest has himself
also ceased from his works as God did from His. Let us therefore
be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to
the same example of disobedience.
The story was told of Stephen Merrit, a godly
old undertaker in New York who had a very wayward son. He always
protected him and paid the police to get him out of trouble. One
day, as he was praying, God spoke to him, “How long will you
be trying to save your son? Now, when you are through, I will undertake.” Merrit
surrendered him to God, and when the police came again with complaints,
his response was always, “I have no son”. When he got
the news that the boy fell off the bridge, his response was, “I
have no son”. The police could not believe it. They dragged
the river only to find out that the body was another man’s.
Three months after, the boy returned home beautifully dressed and
saved. He was never wayward again because God had taken hold of his
life.
The problem with many believers is that they are holding unto
their problems – sicknesses, habits and difficulties – with
such a clutch that God cannot get it out of their hands. They are
focusing so much on the problem that they lose sight of the mercy
and the power of God. That is a sign that they do not trust Him.
God is able to take care of all our needs, cares and fears; and
He is able to fight our battles. All we need to do is trust him.
The Lord is telling you today to quit struggling and start trusting: “Casting
all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Pet
5:7). Cease from holding unto your problems, release them to
God, trust in Him, and let your heart be at rest. He will undertake
for you.
