Passage: Psalm
78: 40-43
How often they provoked Him in the wilderness,
and grieved Him in the desert! Yes, again and again they tempted
God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They did not remember
His power: The day when He redeemed them from the enemy, when
He worked His signs in Egypt, And His wonders in the field of
Zoan.
God is the Almighty. Nothing is too hard for Him.
However, there are times we limit what God can do in our lives through
unbelief and hardness of heart.
The people of Israel were God’s covenant people and God
delivered them from the bondage of Egypt by great power. He parted
the Red Sea for them to pass on dry ground. He led them as a good
shepherd by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night,
gave them manna from heaven, and made them drink water from the
rock. He defended them from their enemies and indeed pampered them
like precious children. However, God was not pleased with them
because of their unbelief and hardness of heart. When they had
no water, they murmured. When they had no food, they complained.
When they looked around and could not see Moses, they prevailed
on Aaron to make an idol for them. They always promised to obey
all that God commanded, but could hardly keep to their words. When
they sent spies to view the Promised Land, they believed the evil
report, doubted God and rebelled against Him. They therefore limited
the Holy One. His anger was turned against them and He treated
them as enemies. He caused them to wander in the wilderness for
40 years until they all died. Only Joshua and Caleb who believed
him entered the Promised Land.
When we turn away from God, we build a wall between
Him and us that He cannot hear and bless us. When we doubt Him, we
make Him too small and shut Him out of our situation. And when we
harden our hearts to Him, we place ourselves on the left hand of
His judgment.
We must be ready to return to the Lord in faith and righteousness
and let Him be God over our lives and over our situations. We must
determine to follow Him fully like Caleb so that He may bring us
into our promised inheritance (Num 14:24).
Prayer: Lord, forgive me for
every sin of unbelief; help me to follow you wholeheartedly even
when situations seem rough; bring me into my promised possession.
