Passage: Matthew
14:22-25
Immediately Jesus made His disciples get
into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent
the multitudes away. And when He had sent the multitudes away,
He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening
came, He was alone there. But the boat was now in the middle
of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. Now
in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking
on the sea.
Prayer is one of the greatest secrets of a victorious
Christian life. There is great truth in the saying that a prayerful
Christian is a powerful Christian. There are times we face storms
of life. These are challenges, trials and tribulations that arise
to shake our spiritual stand and destroy our fortunes in life. It
takes a prayerful lifestyle to maintain stability at such times.
Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, knew this great secret
and made prayer pivotal in his earthly life and ministry. The frequency
and the manner in which he prayed clearly tell the story of a man
soaked deep in prayers. At his baptism, he was in prayers when
the heaven opened (Lk 3:21). On different occasions, he went to
a solitary place and prayed (Mk 1:35; Lk 5:16). He prayed all night
before selecting his apostles (Lk 6:12-13). At transfiguration,
he was praying (Lk 9:28-29). And at the Garden of Gethsemane, before
his arrest, trial and crucifixion, he prayed. He was always drawing
from the prayer source. Little wonder he lived his whole life in
victory.
On this memorable occasion, he had had a long wearisome day. He
had been with a multitude for three days and had fed them all.
Thereafter, he had gotten his disciples into the boat to sail to
the other side. But he climbed up the mountain and was alone in
prayer from evening to morning. At the 4th watch (sometime between
3.00 and 6.00 am), Jesus came to meet the disciples. The storm
had mastered them because they did not pray and were therefore
powerless in the Spirit. They were so harassed and frightened that
they could not recognize their Master when he appeared. But Jesus,
the man who had drawn from the prayer source mastered the storm
and walked on the water.
How wonderful it will be for you to master every storm and walk
on top of every situation in your life. That can only be a reality
if you would constantly draw from the prayer source. Listen to
the voice of the Spirit saying to you, “Pray without
ceasing” - 1 Thes 5:17.
