Passage: 1 Samuel 2:30
"Therefore the LORD God of Israel says: ‘I
said indeed that your house and the house of your father would
walk before Me forever.’ But now the LORD says: ‘Far
be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those
who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.
God is full of love and mercy, but He is also
a consuming fire. He showers His mercy, love and favor upon the upright,
but pours His anger and judgment upon the wicked. He hates pride
and arrogance, and resists those who are haughty; whose hearts are
hardened against Him.
The two sons of Eli were wicked and arrogant. They reduced the
consecrated office of the priesthood to a filthy ball, committed
sacrilege and turned God’s sanctuary into a brothel. They
were rebellious and incorrigible, and despised God’s ordinances.
God sent warnings to their father, but he so esteemed
his children that he would not restrained them. The repercussion
was obvious. God’s judgment came upon their family, and it
was brutal. Eli and his two sons died on the same day, and the ark
of God in their custody was taken away by the enemies of Israel.
His daughter-in-law also died in childbirth, leaving behind an orphaned
boy delivered in precipitate labor and with a name that tells the
story of their tragedy – Ichabod (The glory has departed) (1
Sam 4:12-22).
Pharaoh hardened his heart against God, and God used him to teach
the world that He is Sovereign over all flesh. He broke his will
with ten terrible plagues that devastated his nation, and finally
buried his army in the bowels of the Red Sea (Ex 14:28). Nebuchaddnezzer
exalted himself because of his great wealth and power, and God
reduced him to size. He ate grasses in the forest like an animal
for seven years until he acknowledged the Most High who lives forever
and whose dominion is everlasting. His testimony was, “Now
I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven,
all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who
walk in pride He is able to put down” -Dan 4:37
Prayer: Lord, circumcise my heart
and take away haughtiness from me; help me to always recognize that
you are Lord over my life; teach me to praise and worship you.
