The word “Worship” in the New Testament
is derived from the Greek word, “Proskuneo”, which means, “to
kiss”. It paints the picture of a dog kissing the master’s
hand while wagging its tail in excitement. It reveals true worship
as devotion and adoration that flow from the heart overwhelmed by
pure reverent love. In worship, attitude weighs more than words.
It is not a matter of “how much”, but “how well”.
The weighty elements of worship are sincerity, purity and sacrifice;
and it is the one that comes before God with these sacred elements
that is the true worshipper.
Jesus was hosted to a feast in a small unknown city, east of
Jerusalem, called, Bethany, which means, “home of the poor/afflicted”.
While Jesus was on the table at meal, a woman, full of love and
adoration for him came with a flask of very expensive perfume,
broke it, and poured the content on the head of Jesus. It was
her treasure broken, and the fragrance of her love poured out
in sacrifice to the One she loved and adored.
However, her devotion was offensive to the religious people
who felt that the great treasure poured on Jesus was a waste.
How wrong they were. What sacrifice should be considered a waste
to a King who loves his people so much that He gave Himself for
them? What she offered was true worship. By that, she set up
a monument – a memorial that would not be forgotten in
all ages.
Jesus said, "The hour is coming, and now is, when the
true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” –John
4:23. Now is that hour, and God is seeking for such people
that shall lay their treasure at His feet with sincerity and
pure love. Kneel before the Lord and worship Him. Thank Him
for His mercies to you; praise Him for His marvelous works
and adore Him for His incomparable love and faithfulness.
