Passage: 1 Samuel 17:38-40
So Saul clothed David with his armor, and
he put a bronze helmet on his head; he also clothed him with
a coat of mail. David fastened his sword to his armor and tried
to walk, for he had not tested them. And David said to Saul, "I
cannot walk with these, for I have not tested them." So
David took them off.
How often we are tempted to fight our life battles
with other people’s armor. David was faced with a great challenge.
Goliath, the Philistine giant, had terrorized the Israelites for
40 days, but David knew in his heart that he could defeat him. But …,
how? The first idea that came to mind was, “There is an armor
that has been used by a great man. He can use it too.” David
tried it on, and was worse for it.
You cannot expect to win with an untested armor. Even if it works
for someone else, it is not likely to work for you. What you need
when faced with a great challenge is to use the gift/talent you
are best at. King Solomon said, “A man’s gift makes
room way for him and brings him before great men” (Pro
18:16). Gifts and talents open the door of success, favor and promotion,
and put ones enemies behind him. A champion with his best gifts
is ahead of his foes.
David cast aside the ‘great man’s
armor’ and picked up the ‘sling and stones’ he
had mastered. They did not fail him when he killed the bear and the
lion. He was confident they will not fail against Goliath.
Stop trying to imitate someone else. Begin to use your own gifts
and talents. Do not neglect or hide them. Trust the Lord that they
will help you overcome the challenges before you. Remember the
words of the Lord, “Not by might nor by power, but by
My Spirit,” (Zech 4:6). “It is not of him
who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.” (Rom
9:16). God is able to magnify His power through that gift/talent
to give you the victory you need. Pray, Lord help me to keep my
focus on you; and give me the grace to overcome the challenges
before me.
