VIOLENT
BREAKTHROUGH
Key Passage: 2
Samuel 5: 17, 19 - 20
Now when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David
king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for
David. And David heard of it and went down to the stronghold.
So David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go up
against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?" And
the LORD said to David, "Go up, for I will doubtless deliver
the Philistines into your hand." So David went to Baal
Perazim, and David defeated them there; and he said, "The
LORD has broken through my enemies before me, like a breakthrough
of water." Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal Perazim.
Satan is an enemy of promotion. He hates to see you blessed or
promoted. He is unhappy when you are happy, and he seeks for ways
to destroy your testimony. But you must not danted. He will surely
fail if you will stand strong in faith in God.
David was chosen by God to be king over all Israel. He did his best in
the service of his nation, but King Saul hated him and sought to kill him.
He wandered for many years in the wilderness fleeing from the wrath of
an ungrateful master. When Saul died, David went up with his family to
the city of Hebron and the people anointed him king over the tribe of Judah.
But the other tribes of Israel followed the family of Saul and would not
recognize David as king. It took seven years and six months of conflict
between the families of Saul and David before the whole people of Israel
could recognize the man God chose (2 Sam 3:1). A moment of glory came as
the elders of Israel gathered in Hebron to make David king over all Israel.
David had quick successes as king over Israel, and just as he was being
established in his throne, the enemy struck.
The five great princes of Philistia ganged up with their entire army and
invaded David’s kingdom with the intention to eliminate him. Their
soldiers seemed uncountable and insurmountable. But David was not afraid.
He rather inquired of the Lord in prayer, and God assured him of victory.
David launched a violent assault on the Philistine army and overwhelmed
them. He knew it was God who gave him the victory and exclaimed, “The
Lord did it! He burst through my enemies like a raging flood” 2 Sam
5: 20 (LB).
