Key Passage: 1
Timothy 5:
6
But she who lives in pleasure is dead while
she lives.
Sin brings spiritual death and destroys a person’s
relationship with God. Satan tempts man to sin by appealing to his
natural appetites - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of life (1 Jn 2:16). The Scripture says, “Let
no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’;
for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires
and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;
and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (Js 1:13-15).
Satan used that instrument in the beginning against mankind, and
continues to use the same to bring him into bondage, shame and doom.
We live in a pleasure driven generation. Many people
are ready to do anything to gratify their fleshly desires. There
is Insatiable
love for money and material acquisitions; there is uncontrollable
quest for power and fame; and there is unimaginable craze for fashion.
These have corroded the morality of our modern society. The fruits
of this pleasure-ridden lifestyle have been, compromise, lust, greed,
envy and jealousy; and in some quarters, it has bred, immorality,
abuse, perversion and addiction.
Sin is subtle just like the old serpent (Gen 3:1).
One could be rotting away inwardly while he may seem alright outwardly.
But when the sin
eats very deep into ones soul, it plunges one into eternal woe and
doom. God spoke about a people He wiped out with fire: “This
was the sin of your sister Sodom: She … (was) arrogant, overfed
and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were
haughty and did detestable things before Me. Therefore I did away
with them as you have seen” (Ezek 16: 49-5 NIV). Apostle James
spoke to the rich who wallowed in pleasure, “Come now, you
rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your
riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold
and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against
you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have lived on the earth
in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day
of slaughter” (Js 5:1-3,5).
Every pleasure driven pursuit is idolatry. It is
sin that must be repented of, or be punished by God who is holy.
When we have, we
must think of those who do not have. When we enjoy the blessings
of God in our lives, we must guard against abuse and wastage. When
we explore and enjoy our liberty in Christ Jesus, we should ensure
that we do not cross the border into immorality and indecency. “All
things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things
are lawful for me, but not all things edify” (1 Cor10:23).
Pray, Lord, help me to reject the pleasures of sin;
establish me in your righteousness.
