Week 19: May 3 - 9, 2004
The Desperate
Faith of a True Mother
Key Passage: Mark
7: 25 - 30
For a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard
about Him, and she came and fell at His feet. The woman was
a Greek, a Syro-Phoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him
to cast the demon out of her daughter. But Jesus said to her, "Let
the children be filled first, for it is not good to take the
children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs." And
she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, yet even the
little dogs under the table eat from the children’s crumbs." Then
He said to her, "For this saying go your way; the demon
has gone out of your daughter." And when she had come
to her house, she found the demon gone out, and her daughter
lying on the bed.
The Greek woman seemed ignored, denied and insulted, but she would
not give up. Why? … Because her daughter was in trouble and
she knew she could receive help from Jesus. She was ready to put
up with the insult for the sake of her sick child. Her desperate
faith brought the deliverance of her daughter.
Is it not unfortunate that a lot of young people are deprived of the care
and protection of their mothers? Some mothers are cut up in the hot pursuit
for money, success, career and pleasure that they neglect the care and
protection their children desperately need. This has not augured well for
the healthy development of those children.
Our country, Nigeria, had a civil war from 1967 to 1970. My parents then
had seven children and we were on the Biafran side of the country. The
Biafran side witnessed a lot of insecurity, starvation, sicknesses and
diseases. At a time, our father could hardly make a living because of the
conscription exercise of the Biafran military authorities. However, our
mother stood like a lioness nurturing us and providing for our needs. She
tried to give us the best in the circumstance. It took her a lot of pains
and troubles, and days of tireless labor, but she stood firm because of
her faith in God and her love for us. With my childhood memory, I could
recall those nights when she would spend many hours in prayer to God for
our sake. Little wonder we all survived the war and its ravages.
How wonderful it will be for every mother to take pains to nurture and
care for their children, and bring them to Jesus in prayers? Our families
will be better for it and our children will grow up to be grateful that
God gave them mothers that care.
Pray for
all mothers that God will help them in the proper upbringing
of their children. Pray for greater love and understanding
between the mothers and their children.
