Key Passage: Habakkuk
3: 17-19
Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor
fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail,
and
the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from
the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls—Yet I will
rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The
LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s
feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills.
There are times we fear in the face of danger
and despair in the face of hurt or calamity, and we wonder where
God is and why some things should happen to us. Oftentimes we wonder – why
we should lose a loved one; why we should fail in an endeavor;
why we did not receive a breakthrough we expected; why we should
lose some possessions that are precious to us; or why we should
fall into one trouble or another. But the reality is that it is
when we face such circumstances that the grace of God is revealed
in our lives.
Grace is unmerited favor. It is found in the
power, love and faithfulness of God. It was there with Daniel in
the lions den. It was present
with the three Hebrew youths in the fiery furnace. It was found
with Jonah in the belly of a fish. It is when we face such harsh
circumstances in our lives that we should lean on the grace of
God to see us through. The Lord said, “When you pass through
the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall
not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not
be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you” (Is 43:2).
The Psalmist said, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of
the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Ps 23:4).
During the period of the Babylonian captivity
of Israel, when every sweet juice turned sour in the lips of the
people of Israel and
the future seemed very dark, Habakkuk learnt to lean on the Almighty
Who was his strength and who was able to deliver them and cause
them to triumph over their situation. He fastened his faith in
the infinite goodness and faithfulness of God. There he found
grace and joy in the God of his salvation.
God Himself is the strength and the portion of
His people (Ps 73:26). And though life may present disappointments
and calamities, He
remains the infinite good and faithful Father; mighty to save
and able to pour through the soul an overflowing tide of holy peace
and gladness.
Pray, Lord, help me to recognize you in my situation;
teach me to be always joyful, knowing that You will never forsake
me.
