I HAVE
TOUCHED YOUR LIPS
Key Passage: Isaiah
6: 5 - 8
So I said: "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am
a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people
of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of
hosts." Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in
his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from
the altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: "Behold,
this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and
your sin purged." Also I heard the voice of the Lord,
saying: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then
I said, "Here am I! Send me."
The mouth is a great armory as it contains the
greatest weapon in the human body – the tongue. The tongue
is small, but it ignites great fires (Jam 3:5-6). It is the greatest
vehicle of human authority (Prov 18:21). A person could be established
or destroyed by his tongue; he could also be condemned or justified
by it (Prov 12:19). The tongue reveals who a person is and who he
serves (Ps 5:9; 37:30; Jam 3:9).
Isaiah was a great prophet who lived in the days of Uzziah, a righteous king
who turned away from God in the latter years of his life because of pride.
When Uzziah went to the temple and attempted to burn incense, he was resisted
by the priests, and God struck him with leprosy, in which condition he died
(2 Chron 26:16-19). Isaiah was devastated to see everything fall apart in
the land: the people were corrupt, the throne violated and the temple defiled.
But when he went to the temple, what he saw shocked him - the true King was
seated upon His throne and His majesty filled the temple. The altar of atonement
was burning, and the heavenly attendants – the Seraphim – were
bowing to the King of glory shouting, “Holy! Holy! Holy!”
Instantly, God’s holiness stripped Isaiah of his self-righteousness
and he cried out in fear and brokenness, “Woe is me…!” His
brokenness and confession provoked the mercy of God, and mercy brought him
forgiveness and atonement, “Then one of the seraphim flew to me,
having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the
altar. And he touched my mouth with it, and said: ‘Behold, this has
touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.’” (Is
6:6-7). Then did Isaiah hear the voice of the Lord calling, “Whom
shall I send, and who will go for us?” and he was able to answer
in surrender, “Here am I; send me.” (Is 6:8).
