The Sovereign
Power of the Omnipotent
Key Passage: Acts
9: 1 - 5
Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the
disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters
from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found
any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring
them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed he came near Damascus,
and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he
fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul,
Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" And he said, "Who
are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus,
whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against
the goads."
Is it not foolishness for a mortal to think he can frustrate the
plan and purpose of God for His creation, or to think He can box
the Almighty to a halt and forestall the move of His Spirit? Saul
of Tarsus, the enemy of the early Christians, was “breathing
threats and murder” against the believers. He endorsed
the killing of Stephen, the first martyr. He also played a pivotal
role in the first major persecution that caused the scattering
of the church in Jerusalem (Act 8:1-4). He thought he was unstoppable,
until he encountered the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Scripture reveals that God is great, mighty and awesome (Deut 10:17;
Neh 9:32). He is a consuming fire (Deut 4:24; Heb 12:29). No one can resist
him (Job 9:12; 11:10).
The proud, arrogant and seemingly almighty Saul saw himself crumble under
the radiant glory of the Very Almighty. The voice of the Sovereign Lord
shot into his soul, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Then
was he to realize that when he was raising his hand against the saints,
he was raising it against the Lord of heaven and earth.
His will being broken by the authority of the voice that spoke, and “trembling
and astonished”, he squeaked, “Who are You, Lord”. And
the voice he heard was the last he expected – the One he hated, despised,
condemned and opposed, was the One who responded, “I am Jesus,
whom you are persecuting”.
Is it not wonderful to know that every enemy of God’s people is God’s
enemy? Is it not awesome to recognize that the same God that subdued Pharaoh
of Egypt, humbled Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and weighed Belshazzar his
son in a balance in their palaces is able to break the will of your enemies
and bring them to their knees? That God shall stand by your side and fight
for you against the enemies of His purpose in your life.
Arise in prayer and declare that every enemy of God’s plan and purpose
for your life and the lives of God’s people be subdued in the name
of Jesus. Declare that their will shall be broken by the sovereign power
of Jesus Christ, and they will surely bow.
