Key Passage: Luke
2: 21-22
And when eight days were completed for the circumcision
of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the
angel before He was conceived in the womb. Now when the days
of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed,
they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord
Jesus the Son of God was born into the world and
raised in the house of Mary and Joseph. After his circumcision he
was taken to the temple where they presented him to the Lord. As
he was growing up, Jesus stayed back in the temple dialoging with
teacher of the law on the word of God. When John was baptizing in
Jordan, Jesus went to be baptized to fulfill all righteousness. There
he was filled with the Holy Spirit and led to the wilderness where
he fasted and prayed. During the days of his earthly ministry, he
spent a lot of time alone with God in prayers. He committed himself
to doing the will of God and fulfilling the purpose for which he
was sent. He went about declaring the good news of the Kingdom of
God and healing all that were oppressed by the Devil. He said, "My
food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (Jn
4:23). At the height of his travail, he said to the Father, “Not
My will, but Yours, be done” (Lk 22:42). He was truly dedicated
to God throughout his life.
There are many people today who were presented to the Lord by their
parents at birth but who are not living true to that commitment as
they grow up. Some attend to the things of God only when it is convenient,
while others feel they are too busy – too busy to pray, to
study the word of God or to witness to the unsaved. There are also
cases where people that are regular at bars, casinos and brothels,
and those who are involved in drug abuse, gangsterism and occultism
are those who grew up with godly parents, attended Sunday schools
and sang in church choirs. These people did not continue on the path
of the godly legacy which their parents laid down for them and have
as a result become depraved.
As we come to the end of the year, we should ask ourselves some pertinent
questions: “How much time do I spend alone with God?” “How
is my commitment to His service?” “Have I presented my
body to God as a living sacrifice and as a holy temple?” Jesus
said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Lk 9:23). And "No
one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for
the kingdom of God." (Lk 9:62). This is the time to make a decision
to present ourselves afresh to God as we enter a new year. It is
also the time for those who have turned away from God to return to
Him. The Lord will help us as we do. Pray: Lord, I present myself
to You; come and reign supreme in my life.
