Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief
tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus
was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short
stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree
to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus
came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus,
make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house."
Life is full of walls, and the picture of our world is full of
images of people who have crumbled at the foot of their walls.
Many great aspirations and endeavors have been frustrated and terminated
in the face of obstacles, oppositions and fear. But God wants us
to look beyond our walls and see His great wisdom and power in
turning around impossible situations for our good.
Zacchaeus was surrounded by walls that seemed insuperable. The first was the
wall of ego and pride – he was rich and well known in the
community; the second was the wall of condemnation – he
was considered a sinful man unworthy to be seen around a holy prophet;
the third was the wall of the crowd – they could
not give him the preferential treatment he was used to; and the fourth
was the wall of his stature – he was too short to
look over the heads and too small to push through the crowd. His condition
seemed impossible and irredeemable.
However, Zacchaeus would not let the walls obliterate his vision
and frustrate his quest to see Jesus. He knew he had a part to
play in writing his success story. He did not quit, neither did
he sit down and complain, nor did he continue to jump behind an
insurmountable wall. He brought to bear right sense and active
faith, ran against the crowd to the direction Jesus was to go,
climbed a sycamore tree and was set to see Jesus. Did his faith
move Jesus? Yes it did! Jesus stopped, looked up, saw him, called
him down, went to his home and blessed him.
Oh! How wonderful it will be if we would refuse to succumb to the pressures
that mount against our aspirations and endeavors and press forward in wisdom
and faith to our divine destinies. We must recognize that our God is a
way maker (Is 43:16), and He is at work in us (Phil 2:13). He is far greater
than our walls (Jer 32:17). He will not let us down.
Pray: Lord, grant me the wisdom and grace not to turn back in the face
of challenges and oppositions; help me to press on till I see my ultimate
victory.
