Key Passage: 1
Samuel 16: 10-12
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before
Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "The LORD has not chosen
these." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons
here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest,
but behold, he is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said to
Jesse, "Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till
he comes here." And he sent, and brought him in. Now he
was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. And the
LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he." - RSV
When one meditates on the sovereignty of God’s
choice, one can only fear the Almighty God. He chooses anyone He
wills for whatever service He desires and none can question Him.
He could choose the greatest or the least; the wisest or the most
foolish; the highest or the basest. However, whatever vessel he chooses,
He equips and enables to accomplish the purpose He has designed.
He said, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated" (Rom
9: 13). He chose Joseph over his brothers to preserve his family
through the years of drought; he chose Moses, a stammering fugitive,
to deliver Israel from the bondage of Egypt; he chose Cyrus, a gentile
king, to deliver Israel from the captivity of Babylon; he also chose
Mary over all the other virgins to bear the Messiah. All these were
done by the sovereign choice of God and goes to show that the
Most High rules in the kingdom of men, gives it to whomever He will,
and
sets over it the lowest of men (Dan 4:17).
When Prophet Samuel came to Jesse’s house to anoint a king
for Israel, no one gave David a chance to be chosen. He was the youngest
in the family and was not even invited. His other brothers failed
to be chosen, but when David came, the Lord said, "Arise, anoint
him; for this is he." Though many might not have recognized
it, David had qualities that God looks out for in the vessels He
delights to use. His passion for God, his fervor in praise and worship
and his humility and brokenness in the face of sin were remarkable.
Little wonder he was called the man after God’s heart (Acts
13:22). When he even appeared at the military camp, many did not
still believe in him. But he had killed a lion and a bear and was
determined to take up Goliath, the Philistine giant. There, it became
manifest what God could do through a man He has chosen.
God knows the qualities he has put in anyone He
has chosen and the grace available to him to fulfill his calling.
He anoints such one
to quicken these qualities and enable the person to do exploit to
His glory. He said to Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the
womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you" (Jer
1: 5). And Jesus said to his disciples, "Ye have not chosen
me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and
bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain" (Jn 15:
16).
Pray, Lord, help me to be that vessel you desire
to use; grant me the grace to fulfill my calling.
