Key Passage: Exekiel
9: 4-
6
And the LORD said to him, "Go through the
midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a
mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the
abominations that are done within it." To the others He
said in my hearing, "Go after him through the city and kill;
do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity. Utterly slay old
and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do
not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary." So
they began with the elders who were before the temple.
There are many that know God as a God of mercy and
love, but He is also a God of judgment. When people turn away from
God and commit evil and abomination, God visits them in anger and
punishes them for their sins. The Scripture reveals that God is a
consuming fire (Deut 4:24). He said, "I kill, and I make alive;
I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of
my hand. If I whet My glittering sword, and My hand takes hold on
judgment, I will render vengeance to My enemies, and repay those
who hate Me. I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword
shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and the captives,
from the heads of the leaders of the enemy" (Deut 32:39,41-42).
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Heb
10:31).
God opened the eyes of Prophet Ezekiel to see the
angels of judgment being released upon Israel to punish them for
their abomination and
idolatry. One of the angels was sent ahead of the others with an
inkhorn to put a mark on the forehead of all those who sigh and
cry over the abominations of the people. Behind him went the other
six
angels armed with battle-axes and mandated to kill everyone, irrespective
of their age, gender or status; but they were not to come near
anyone with the mark of the inkhorn. The judgment was to commence
from the
Sanctuary and from among the elderly men.
The Lord has promised to preserve the righteous
from trouble (Ps 32:7). When the night of woe came upon Egypt and
the angels of
judgment slew the firstborn of every family, God preserved those
who had the
mark of the blood of the Passover Lamb on their doors (Ex 12:23).
That blood is symbolic of the blood of Jesus who became the Passover
Lamb for the New Testament saints, that because of his blood,
we are preserved and protected from judgment, woe and doom. In these
last days when the judgment of God is being poured upon many
because
of the sins and the abominations of our world, that same God
will protect you from every evil and preserve you for his heavenly
Kingdom,
if you will abhor sin and walk in His righteousness (2 Tim 4:18).
Pray, O Lord, help me to abhor sin and every other
abomination that will bring the wrath of God upon me; protect me
and preserve
me for
your heavenly Kingdom. Amen
