TAKING
THE CHALLENGE FOR A GREAT PRIZE
Key Passage: Joshua
15: 16-18
And Caleb said, "He who attacks Kirjath
Sepher and takes it, to him I will give Achsah my daughter as
wife." So Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb,
took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. Now it
was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her
father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb
said to her, "What do you wish?" She answered, "Give
me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give
me also springs of water." So he gave her the upper springs
and the lower springs.
Great aspirations beget great accomplishments, and
great accomplishments beget great rewards. The pathway to greatness
is for the strong – those that are ready to take up great challenges.
It is great challenges that bring great victories and it is those
that win great victories that rule the world.
Othniel was a young man with a great aspiration. He had a role model
in his uncle Caleb who rose to greatness through faith and courage,
and thereby received the reward of the mighty. When the opportunity
came, Othniel took up the challenge to attack and conquer Kirjath
Sepher, a land occupied by warrior giants. He trusted God, put his
life on the line and conquered the land, and Caleb gave him Achsah
his daughter. What Othniel received in Achsah was not just a wife,
but also all the blessings that go with a priceless jewel. God used
her to bring him blessings and favor he never imagined. She moved
him to ask her father for a piece of property. She also went further
to visit her father and received from him a land with springs of
water.
Our generation is in want of people with great aspirations. Many
are unwilling to step out of their comfort zones and take up challenges
that would launch them into greatness. They prefer an easygoing life
where they would not need to work hard. They are comfortable with
an average performance and have no drive for excellence. The result
is the high level of mediocrity, failures and disappointments we
witness today, especially among the younger generation. It is easy
for a high jumper to set a low bar for himself and leap over it.
If he must rise to be a champion, he must learn to stretch himself
to his limits. Othniel did, and wrote his name in gold. He rose to
become the first military leader in Israel who delivered them from
the captivity of the king of Mesopotamia (Jug 3:8-11). Israel enjoyed
peace for forty year under his leadership.
Pray, Lord, grant me the faith and courage to take challenges that
will launch me into greatness. May each challenge I take bring great
victory in my life.
