Key Passage: 1
Thessalonians 2: 6-9
As apostles of Christ we could have been
a burden to you, but we were gentle among you, like a mother
caring for
her little children. We loved you so much that we were delighted
to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as
well, because you had become so dear to us. Surely you remember,
brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order
not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of
God to you. NIV
Mankind by nature is self-centered. People are
tended to think of themselves first before considering others.
Many think more of what they would derive from a relationship than
what they would put in. Some in a guardianship position over others
think more of how they would exploit those under them rather than
how they would assist them. However, the Word of God reveals that
our attitude to others, especially to those placed under us should
be like that of a loving mother to her nursing children.
A mother cares for, trains and nurtures her children
without considering what natural benefits she would derive from
them. She gives them
her resources, her time, her energy and indeed, her life, without
expecting anything in return. Her joy is to see her children
healthy and strong as they grow up.
Paul knew that as an apostle, he was entitled
to be sustained by the churches he planted; however, he would not
exact that authority
over the Christians in Thessalonica. He rather acted towards
them like a mother who loves and cherishes her nursing children.
He
tasked himself for their sakes in order not to be a burden on them.
We have a responsibility to care for those God
has placed under us. We must be ready to share with them, not only
the gospel but
our lives. We should always instruct them through the Word, pray
for them and live an exemplary life for them to follow. Jesus said, “Those
whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost” John
17:12. “And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they
also may be sanctified by the truth” John 17:19. He virtually
lived his life for those he came to save, and at the end gave his
life in sacrifice for mankind. Through that he gained all those
who come to God through him.
Let us learn from the example of Jesus and give
our best in love and care to others. And just like a mother to
her nursing children,
let us give ourselves to those God has placed under us. Our world
will be better for it and God will be glorified.
