Key Passage: John
2: 9-10
When the master of the feast had tasted
the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came
from
(but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of
the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, "Every
man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests
have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine
until now!"
Wine is a beverage that is meant to give sweetness
and refreshment. It is at its best when it is fresh and undiluted.
But when it is stale and corrupted, it is sour and not refreshing.
The gifts the world has for mankind is like stale and corrupt wine.
The pleasure that come with immorality, the riches that come with
corruption and the prosperity that come with deception are stale
and corrupt. They do not endure, but come with disappointment, sorrow,
bondage, condemnation and doom.
Jesus is the one that gives the true wine. The gifts he gives are
refreshing and enduring, and they are sweeter as days go by. He said, “I
have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more
abundantly” (Jn 10:10). The best wine is the Holy Spirit which
he gives to those that believe in him (Jn 7:37-38).
The celebrants in Cana of Galilee could not have imagined the miracle
awaiting them when they invited Jesus to their wedding feast. At
the height of their celebration, they ran out of wine. And Jesus
miraculously turned six pots of water into wine. They had abundant
wine for the feast, and it was refreshing and of the best quality.
When the chairperson of the occasion tasted the new wine, he was
baffled that such good wine would be left until close to the end
of the feast. So are the gifts and blessings of the Lord: “They
are new every morning; great is His faithfulness” (Lam 3: 23).
The Lord has promised to pour out His Spirit upon all flesh in this
end-time. He wants everyone who desires to partake of the best wine
he gives. Jesus said, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me
and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out
of his heart will flow rivers of living water" (Jn 7:37-38).
This he said of the Holy Spirit who he gives to those that believe
in him. The Scripture also says, “And do not be drunk with
wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph
5: 18).
The first step in receiving this best wine is to accept Jesus Christ,
the giver of this new wine, into your life as your Lord and Savior.
Then ask him to purge you of every stale and corrupt wine and give
you the new wine. The Lord is faithful. He will surely purge you
by the blood he shed on Calvary and give you a brand new life. He
will also pour on you his Spirit and use you as vessels of honor
to the glory and praise of his name.
Pray, Lord, pour out your Spirit
upon me; fill my life with every good gift that Jesus gives.
