Key Passage: Luke
10: 17 - 22
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, "Lord,
even the demons are subject to us in Your name." And He
said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions,
and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any
means hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the
spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names
are written in heaven." In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the
Spirit and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent
and revealed them to babes. All things have been delivered to
Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father,
and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the
Son wills to reveal Him."
I have had days of bubbling with intense ecstatic
happiness that was not motivated by material gains or success but
by an inner feeling of excitement. This is usually given expression
in laughter, singing and dancing. Such is the joy in the Spirit.
It is that inward excitement that is inspired by the Holy Spirit
in the life a child of God.
The disciples experienced an extra-ordinary manifestation of the
power of God as they went to preach the Gospel. They rejoiced seeing
the demons subdued under the authority of Jesus. Jesus at the instance
proclaimed the triumph of the Kingdom of God over the kingdom of
Satan and gave the disciples a further mandate to go forward and
destroy the powers of darkness. He also seized the opportunity
to tell them the greater reason for them to rejoice – that
their names are written in Heaven.
The main reasons for our joy and glory should not be because of
the transitory blessings and victories we receive as believers,
but because of the eternal privileges and blessings that are guaranteed
for us because we have a relationship with Jesus the Son of God.
Some of the transitory blessings we desire may not come when we
want them, but we have weightier reasons to always be joyful. We
are eternally saved, never to be doomed because of sin; we have
a Heavenly inheritance and are guaranteed the mercy and the favor
of God; and we have access to the secrets of God. These blessings
are eternal treasures that cannot be earned.
What is more? Jesus rejoiced because of these eternal treasures
and because the once depraved and doomed humanity has began to
partake of the glorious riches of Heaven.
Rejoice and sing praises to God who has freely given us these
eternal privileges and blessings. Rejoice and be
glad that you
are a partaker of God’s unspeakable love.
