Key Passage: Matthew
9: 2, 6-8
"I have told you these things, so that
in Me you may have [perfect] peace {and} confidence. In the
world you have tribulation {and} trials {and} distress {and}
frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident,
certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have
deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for
you.]" Amp.
Many years ago in Mid-Western Nigeria, a white missionary
visited a small village church. He was a fervent preacher of the
word of God. Tragedy struck in the village with the sudden death
of a baby boy who was dedicated to God at the church the previous
Sunday. The villagers were so shocked by the incident that they decided
not to bury the baby until the missionary arrived. They had heard
him preach that Jesus Christ rose from the dead, and that faith in
him could bring back the dead to life; so they believed that if he
prayed, the baby would live again. They waited to no avail.
Suddenly they saw, coming on a bicycle, the boy who attended to the
missionary. A joyous uproar welcomed him. The people believed that
even though the missionary had not come, his boy could raise the
baby. When the boy saw the situation on ground he was scared, since
he had never prayed for the sick, not to talk of raising the dead.
But because of the overwhelming expectation of the crowd and their
great faith, he picked up courage, knelt beside the baby and prayed.
He then got up, jumped back on his bicycle and rode away, not being
certain of what would happen. Then, the incredible happened: the
baby rose up alive; and the joy in the village was unspeakable.
There is a lot that could happen if believers would
learn to approach God in faith. Many people seek God with a defeatist
attitude thinking
that by reason of their sulking and weeping, God will have pity
on them and grant their requests. However, we must know that God
is
not moved by pity but by faith. Where faith is found, miracle is
expected.
In today’s passage, some people had a big problem. Their friend
was paralyzed and needed healing from Jesus. They went through a
lot of problems to bring him to Jesus, and their faith and perseverance
paid off. Jesus seeing their faith said to the man, “Cheer
up, your sins are forgiven you”. The Jewish religious officials
present questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sins; and Jesus,
overlooking their religious bigotry said to the man, “Rise
up, pick up your bed and go home”; and the man did and was
made whole.
The Lord is saying to you today to cheer up, stand
steadfast in faith and expect God’s miracle in your life.
Pray, Lord, grant me
the faith and courage to believe you for great things; use me to
do exploit for Your glory.
