Key Passage: Esther
4: 13-16
And Mordecai told them to answer Esther: "Do
not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s
palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely
silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the
Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house
will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom
for such a time as this?" Then Esther told them to reply
to Mordecai: "Go, gather all the Jews who are present in
Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days,
night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will
go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I
perish!"
Fasting sometimes is an intense devotional act by
a desperate soul that needs the intervention of a miracle working
God. When one finds himself in a strait and all that one sees are
difficulties, disappointments and woes, fasting could be needed to
provoke God to make a way by His mighty power.
When Queen Esther received the sudden call of her uncle, Mordecai,
to arise and seek deliverance for the Jews in Shushan, she knew she
was in for a dangerous mission. Her life was at risk, but it was
obvious she would not escape the approaching tragedy if she failed
to act. She returned the message to Mordecai, saying, “Go and
gather all the Jews of Shushan and fast for me; do not eat or drink
for three days, night or day; and I and my maids will do the same;
and then, though it is strictly forbidden, I will go in to see the
king; and if I perish, I perish” Esth 4:16 TLB.
It so happened after their fast that Queen Esther received favor
before the king and her life was spared. The king also lost his sleep
till he remembered to honor her cousin, Mordecai. For Haman, the
enemy of the Jews, the events turned sour. His wings of pride were
clipped and his wisdom was turned to foolishness. He incurred the
wrath of the king and was hanged on the same gallows he meant for
Mordecai. Queen Esther further secured the reversal of the tragic
decree that ordered the annihilation of the Jews. Their day of terror
and doom was turned to a day of joy and celebration. They united
in defense of their nation and destroyed those that hated them.
As we seek the move of God in our lives and situations, let us learn
to deepen our devotion before him with fasting. That will enable
us secure his help in times of troubles and open doors of victory
to us in difficult circumstances.
Pray: Lord, teach me to deepen
my devotion to you with fasting; show me the way of victory in
times of difficulties.
