Key Passage: John
14: 15-17
"If you love Me, keep My commandments. And
I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that
He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him;
but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
Towards the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus sought
to introduce to his disciples the person who has been his closest
companion and who has been the secret of his success. He is the third
person in the Godhead - the Holy Spirit. He endued Jesus with power
without measure in the River Jordan and led him from victory to victory
throughout his ministry. Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit
is their greatest need for life and ministry; and he will pray the
Father to send him to them as their ever abiding companion, helper
and friend.
Jesus made is clear that the promise of the Holy Spirit is for those
who love him; who demonstrate that love through their obedience to
his Words. The Holy Spirit is loving and caring just like Jesus,
and he always stands by the believer to help him through life challenges.
He comes to the believer as “Parakletos” – One
called alongside to help. He comes as an advocate called to defend
an accused; an intercessor called to plead for an offender; a counselor
called to give wisdom to the simple; a strengthener called to strengthen
the weak; a standby called to lift up one that is down; and a comforter
called to succor the broken hearted.
The Holy Spirit comes to indwell the believer to transform him from
within. He abides with him to teach him the ways of God, reveal the
truth about the Kingdom of God to him, guide him in making right
choices, lead him safely through the storms of life and assure him
of his divine heirship. He also comes to endue him with power from
above to make him effective in his service as a true witness of our
Lord Jesus.
We need the Holy Spirit as a friend, helper and true companion to
lead and direct us in our lives. We need his power to live victoriously
over Satan, over sin and over the world. We need his assurance to
keep us strong in the fight even when the going gets tough. We need
his wisdom to keep us in the path of success. We need his intimate
love and communion to draw us into a deeper personal relationship
with God.
Welcome him today and let him take his rightful place in your life
and you will experience the glory of God.
Pray: Sweet Holy Spirit,
come and fill me. Take your rightful place in my life and reveal
the glory of God in me.
