RAPED! Part 2

Key Passage: Genesis 34: 1-2, 5

Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her. And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter.

Many of the victims of rape are young people on a social adventure who found themselves at a wrong place with a wrong crowd. Dinah was born as an only girl in a family of thirteen children to a mother who spent all her married life seeking for love and care and never found it. When she found herself in a social oriented city, Dinah sneaked out of her protected home to have fun with the young girls of the city and was entrapped. By the time she knew it, she was in the bosom of Shechem, the icon of the land, who took advantage of her and ravished her. She lost everything – her virginity, her honor, her pride, her peace and her future.

Dinah’s story is sad and has great lessons for our young people today on the danger of vain curiosity and the need to love and enjoy home. Many of the sceneries that appear attractive and harmless in our world today are full of hidden vices and Satan inspired allurements. Many of the actors are also motivated by lust, perversion and selfish ambition that one needs to be careful so as not to be entrapped and destroyed.

There is also a great challenge for parents to make the home a place of true love, joy and comfort that the children would not need to go elsewhere to seek for them. They should take responsibility to ensure that their children learn chastity and honor from their formative years. They should also teach them to recognize the right crowd and discern danger signals when they appear. Above everything, they should pray for God’s protection and guidance for their children.

We all can learn from the story of Dinah to watch our passions and tread with wisdom so that we are not entrapped. Many lives have been wasted and families destroyed because people made wrong phone calls, opened wrong internet mails, switched on to wrong television channels and hung around with the wrong people. Our world is very volatile - full of deception, greed, wickedness and abuse that we all need to be prudent and discerning in order that our lives may be fruitful and fulfilling.

Pray: Merciful Father, protect me and my loved ones from all worldly entrapments; grant us wisdom and discernment and make our lives fruitful and fulfilling to the glory of Your name.
