THE JOY OF GIVING TO GOD

Key Passage: 1 Chronicles 29: 9-12

Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had offered willingly to the LORD; and King David also rejoiced greatly. Therefore David blessed the LORD before all the assembly; and David said: "Blessed are You, LORD God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all. Both riches and honor come from You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give strength to all.

Giving to God is one of our greatest privileges as the people of God. It affirms our relationship to Him as our Father, our Lord and our God; and that we are His partners in building His Kingdom. That is why we should always give to God bountifully and joyfully.

God raised David from a humble background to make him a leader in Israel. He protected him from being killed by King Saul and made him king over all Israel. David was truly dedicated to God and God blessed him and subdued all the enemy nations before him, until he became established. Then he thought, “What will I do for God who has done so much for me.” He desired to build a temple for God, but God restrained him saying that his son, Solomon, will build the temple. Yet, David gave “with all his might” (1 Chron 29:2) towards the building.

David did not give because he had to, and he did not give because of what he wanted God to do for him. He rather gave because he loved God and was appreciative of His mercies towards him. He recognized that all he had, and much more, belonged to God. Though he could not build the temple, he would not be denied the joy of partnering with such a great God. He called on the congregation of Israel to follow suit, and they did. They gave willingly and bountifully in gold, silver and precious stones. And rather than being sad for parting with their precious possessions, they rejoiced for the privilege of giving to God who is so good and kind and who has shown them His mercies in wonderful ways.

That should always be our attitude in giving. God is so good and deserves our best. We must not withhold from such a bountiful Father and Friend. We should always give willingly, bountifully and joyfully because it is a great privilege so to do.

Prayer: Lord, give me the heart that delights to give to You. Help me to always rejoice whenever I have the opportunity to partner with you in building Your Kingdom.
