Key Passage: Matthew
4: 8-11
Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly
high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and
their glory. And he said to Him, "All these things I will
give You if You will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus
said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You
shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’" Then
the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to
Him.
Jesus had an encounter with the swapper at the
beginning of his ministry. He came into the world to restore its
kingdom to God and redeem mankind from Satan’s dominion.
He knew that the mission would not be easy and would involve the
long winding rugged path of trials, oppositions, betrayal, suffering
and death. He needed the empowerment from above, which he received
at the River Jordan. But, little had he received the anointing
did the Tempter swoop on him with a swap. He took him to an exceedingly
high mountain and made him an attractive offer: “All these
kingdoms of the world will I give you if you will just bow and
worship me.” The offer seemed like an easy shortcut to his
mission. It meant that he would gain the kingdoms of the world
and their glory without having to suffer, face the cross and die.
All he needed was the simple act of bowing to Lucifer, and the
deal will be done at the snap of the finger.
But Jesus could not be fooled by Satan’s allurement. He knew
that Satan was the false god and king of the world and his kingdom
was already fading and would soon pass away. He knew also that
the Almighty God is the true God and King of both Heaven and Earth,
and Him only deserved to be worshipped. And like Abraham did, Jesus
shouted at the Old Serpent, “Away with your kingdom! For
it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord thy God, Him only
shall you serve.’” He was determined to suffer
and bear the cross rather than compromise and bow to Satan.
Many people today are being carried away by the
allurement of the swapper in their quest for worldly gain and false
pleasure. Many
have received the gains of immorality and the fruits of compromise;
while some others are wallowing in the swamp of false and immoral
relationships. Rather than wait on God for His promised blessings,
they are enjoying the pleasures of sin for a season (Heb 11:25.
They have removed the ancient landmarks and are in the danger of
God’s judgment. God is saying to them “Repent and
return to Me. Wait earnestly on My promise, for it will surely
come to
pass.”
God is seeking His faithful servants who will
take a stand in righteousness and drive out the swapper from their
lives. Jesus said, "Take
My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy
and My burden is light" (Matt 11:29-30).
Pray: Lord I repent
for every compromise in my life. I dedicate myself to stand firmly
in faith and wait on you patiently for the manifestation of your
promised blessings.
