Key Passage: Proverbs
24: 16; Psalm 34: 17-20
For a righteous man may fall seven times and
rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity.
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, and delivers them
out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have
a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many
are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him
out of them all. He guards all his bones; not one of them is
broken.
Life is so full of battles and contradictions
that a child of God may see himself slip and fall. The fall may
be in the form of a life setback or a failure to sin. But God is
rich in mercy and abundant in goodness. He does not forsake the
righteous; He rather forgives him when he repents from his sins,
and delivers and restores him so that he is not utterly consumed.
God chose David to be King of Israel because his heart was after
Him. David did his best to defend his nation and serve their king;
however, King Saul was jealous of him and sought to kill him. David
had to run to seek refuge in desolate places, and God was with
him and preserved his life. At the proper time, God lifted David
from the desolate places and made him king over Israel. David ruled
Israel in righteousness and truth and established justice in the
land. But one day he was tempted and he fell to adultery. God was
very angry with him and would have destroyed him. But when he humbled
himself and repented, God showed him mercy and forgave him. He
had to go through some troubles in his household and in his kingdom
as a result, but God did not forsake him, but saw him through them
all.
There is always that grace for the righteous to rise again when
he has fallen; that is because God is always by the side of the
righteous to lift him up. When Peter feared the raging storm and
began to sink in the river, he cried, saying, “Lord save
me”, and immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand, caught
him, pulled him out of the water and placed him back on the water
and both walked back to the boat (Matt 14: 28-32).
God has promised to always uphold the righteous (Ps 55:22). He
has promised to hear him when he prays and deliver him from troubles,
that he may be able to sing, “Blessed be the LORD my Rock … my
loving-kindness and my fortress, my high tower and my deliverer,
my shield and the One in whom I take refuge” (Ps 144:1-2).
Pray, Lord, save me from sin; keep me in Your
righteousness and uphold me in the time of troubles. I shall not
be moved.
