THE GREAT
POWER OF PRAYER Part 2
Key Passage: Luke
18: 1-8
One day Jesus told his disciples a story
to illustrate their need for constant prayer and to show them
that
they must never give up. “There was a judge in a certain
city,” he said, “who was a godless man with a great
contempt for everyone. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly,
appealing for justice against someone who has harmed her. The
judge ignored her for a while, but eventually she wore him out. ‘I
fear neither God nor man,’ he said to himself, ‘but
this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she
gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant
requests!’” Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson
from this evil judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the
end, so don’t you think God will surely give justice to
His chosen people who plead with Him day and night? Will He keep
putting them off? I tell you, He will grant justice to them quickly” NLT.
Jesus used a story to illustrate to the disciples
the great power of prayer and the importance of persistence in prayer.
Anyone who understands the essence and power of prayer would appreciate
the need to put everything into praying, because it could bring about
the turning around of impossible situations. Jesus explained that
even an unrighteous judge could be moved by the unrelenting appeal
of a helpless woman, how much more God who is just and compassionate.
He will surely hear and help when we call on Him.
God says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver
you, and you shall glorify Me” Ps 50:15. He has committed Himself
to answer prayers. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to
you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him
who knocks it will be opened” Matt 7:7-8. He is emphatic that
no one who comes to Him will go disappointed if he is ready to give
what it takes to receive an answer.
Jacob wrestled with God till it was dawn; he did not give up until
he received the blessing. King Hezekiah turned to the wall and cried
to God to deliver him from death, and God heard him and extended
his life for fifteen years (2 Kg 20:1-5). When Dorcas died, the Christians
in Joppa refused to bury her until Peter came and raised her (Acts
9:36-41). When Herod imprisoned Peter expecting to kill him, the
Church in Jerusalem raised ceaseless prayers for him until God miraculously
released him (Acts 12:1-5).
These people could not be turned back until they received their answers.
Their testimonies are great lessons to us on the secret power of
prayer; and it is until we wake up to persevering prayer that we
will see the move of God we desire in our lives and in our situations.
Pray Until Something Happens.
