Key Passage: 2
Samuel 13: 1, 2, 8, 11-13
After this Absalom the son of David had
a lovely sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of
David loved
her. Amnon was so distressed over his sister Tamar that he became
sick; for she was a virgin. And it was improper for Amnon to
do anything to her. So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s
house; and he was lying down. Then she took flour and kneaded
it, made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. Now when she
had brought them to him to eat, he took hold of her and said
to her, "Come, lie with me, my sister." And she answered
him, "No, my brother, do not force me, for no such thing
should be done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing! "And
I, where could I take my shame? And as for you, you would be
like one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak
to the king; for he will not withhold me from you." However,
he would not heed her voice; and being stronger than she, he
forced her and lay with her.
There has been an upsurge of incidents of rape
in our time. Many people, being driven by passion for fleshly satisfaction,
has gone on rampage against the weak and the unsuspecting, and
have violated them. This depravity in our generation has been aggravated
by the folly of our societies in promoting obscenity, pornography
and a fashion craze that shows “more of the flesh”.
The badly hit are the victims who are left confused, traumatized
and stigmatized, having to live with wounds too deep to be healed.
A person could also be raped when he is wrongfully violated and
suddenly deprived of his prized possession. This could occur in
the form of unjust termination or victimization at the place of
work; or in the form of racial or gender discrimination; or of
broken marriage or business relationship.
Nothing could be more devastating than to be raped. The mental
torment, the emotional trauma, and the pangs of fear and bitterness,
could be venomous. All these, compounded with a feeling of shame,
insecurity, guilt and loss of self worth could plunge the victim
into the deep sea of depression and derangement. That was the story
of Princess Tamar. She was left mortified, bitter and desolate,
caged in her brother’s house to nurture a wound too deep
to heal.
The first thing a person like Tamar needs is comfort and support
from her dear ones. In addition, she needs to quit blaming herself
for her predicament and step out of any cage she has been thrown
into. She also needs to receive the spirit of forgiveness, as that
is the only way to deal with the seed of bitterness. She should
then throw herself into the arms of our Eternal Father and let
Him comfort, heal and restore her. There is no wound that God cannot
heal for there is nothing too difficult for Him.
Pray for those who have been wounded or raped
in one way or the other, that the Lord will grant them true comfort,
healing and
restoration.
