AN EXAMPLE IN HUMILITY

Key Passage: Numbers 12: 3-8

(Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.) Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "Come out, you three, to the tabernacle of meeting!" So the three came out. Then the LORD came down in the pillar of cloud and stood in the door of the tabernacle, and called Aaron and Miriam. And they both went forward. Then He said, "Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings; and he sees the form of the LORD.”

Moses was the greatest example of a man of humility in the Old Testament. He was raised as a prince of Egypt and he had full access to enjoy the highest honors and privileges of the world power of his time. But when he realized what his destiny was and he did what he thought would help to deliver his people, he was betrayed by his compatriot and forced into exile where he lived with the greatest deprivations. I could imagine Moses in Midian living in frustration as a servant for forty years, with his mind clouded with feelings of disappointment, betrayal, rejection, anger, unforgivingness, hate and jealousy. His visions and aspirations had gone and his life was at zero. Then he had an encounter with God.

The ‘Burning Bush’ experience changed Moses, turning him into a most humble man and a man full of vision, wisdom, passion and power. He returned to Egypt and by God’s great power, destroyed the cruel bondage of Egypt and delivered the same people who disappointed and betrayed him. He was most humble, empty of self, and fully dedicated to God and to the needs of his people. When his people rebelled against God, he knelt to ask them to return (Num 16:4); when they broke the commandment, he offered himself as the atonement for their sins (Ex 32:30-32). He was the greatest example of a true leader in the Old Testament. He knew the ways of God and spoke with Him face to face. What an example that neared that which Jesus gave to us in the New Testament?

Christlike humility is attainable. It begins with recognizing your unworthy nature and surrendering your life to Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Seek to know him and his ways. Commit yourself to meditate on the word of God and let it guide you in your entire life endeavor. Live obediently to His will and for the service of humanity. Die to self, ego, pride and all the works of the flesh. And pray earnestly and fervently to God to change you. He will surely hear your prayer and give you the experience that will make your life most fulfilling.

Pray: Lord, help me to live that life that will glorify You always.
